We are delighted to announce that the project "Decision Support Software for Optimal Planning and Sizing of Active Electricity Distribution Networks" has been successfully launched on September 1, 2014. Together with a consortium of research partners (Power Systems Laboratory of ETH Zurich and inspire AG) and the main implementation partner Adaptricity GmbH, we will develop new optimization methods and implementations to tackle the toughest large-scale problems in distribution grid optimization.
The technology will allow distribution grid operators to simulate scenarios with a high penetration of renewable energy generation orders of magnitude faster than today. The optimization entails optimal power flow problems and minimal curtailment of renewable energy. This enables a realistic quantification of the effects of renewables on grid stability, and the associated costs for a safe grid operation due to compensation payments for curtailment of renewables.
Equipped with this fast simulation/optimization capabilities, a decision support software will be developed that automatically explores thousands of grid extension possibilities such as transformer, battery and line placement and their sizing. Such decision support is invaluable to avoid costly investments into the wrong infrastructure that cannot cope with the increasing penetration of renewables in electrical distribution grids.
embotech, short for embedded optimization technologies, was founded in September 2013. We strive to lead the market for numerical optimization solutions that will be integral part of tomorrow's decision making systems. The company is a spin-off of the Automatic Control Laboratory from ETH Zurich.
