When founding Embotech, the Co-Founders, Alexander Domahidi and Juan Jerez, wanted to further enhance numerical optimization technology, developed during their PhDs, to be an integral part of tomorrow’s decision-making systems. The objective was to develop a software that helps real-time decision-making systems to perform faster, more accurately and more safely.
This objective was achieved with Embotech’s flagship numerical core software tool, FORCES PRO. FORCES PRO is an auto-coder which automatically generates highly efficient embeddable C-code designed to solve complex motion problems, given a mathematical description by the user.
Embotech is using FORCES PRO to develop cutting-edge motion planning technology for autonomous vehicles, rockets and other machines.
The software does not use any Artificial Intelligence or Deep Learning as it is a pure deterministic mathematical solution. The advantage is that it can be implemented into vehicles within a short timeframe and certification to automotive norms that are currently in effect will be easier.
Based on this core technology, Embotech has developed over the past months its own Parker and Highway Driver Modules. The Parking Module has been developed as a low speed maneuverer. It can drive through waypoints with the speed of up to 30 km/h and is able to park in any parking spot situation – be it parallel, perpendicular, diagonal, or other – as long as sensors recognize that the vehicle fits in and the way is drivable. No pre-programming of any parking situation is used by Embotech. By recalculating the trajectory on a regular basis while maneuvering it avoids effectively moving objects along the way.
Apart of the embedded autonomous slow maneuvering solution, Embotech also provides an infrastructure-based parking solution based on the same numerical core. In this case, sensors are integrated in the infrastructure and the real-time motion planner is located in the cloud. Vehicles can be remotely driven through e.g. Wifi, LTE or 5G connection. During this trajectory calculation process, the Embotech motion planner optimizes at the same time traffic flow between several vehicles operated remotely in parallel.
The Embotech Highway Driver Module delivers smooth trajectories for the comfort of the passengers and can handle critical situations up to the physical limits of the vehicle – for example during a double lane change in order to avoid obstacles that suddenly appear. During such emergency maneuvers the system can perform braking and evasive steering in all the above driving functions or override the driver when the vehicle is in manual mode.
It can adapt driving behavior of the vehicle in real-time considering passenger preferences or environmental situations like slippery roads due to sudden rain. Because Embotech’s algorithms compute high-quality trajectories, lateral acceleration and jerk is considered for maximum passenger comfort.
Using FORCES PRO, Embotech currently partners with automotive players to develop a Real-time Energy Manager Module. This Module increases fuel efficiency or battery range through optimization of vehicle driving behavior and improved motor management and can be used in passenger vehicles and trucks. With this innovation Embotech reacts to tightened emissions standards and the higher energy consumption through increased computing power e.g. in autonomous vehicles.
