Embotech’s Automated Vehicle Marshalling (AVM) solution has been in development since 2018 and running in real production environments since 2022. In June 2024, it became the first globally certified AVM solution by TÜV Süd, meeting all relevant standards for automated driving on factory grounds and vehicle logistics centers.

AVM enables high-precision autonomous driving at up to 30 km/h, operating safely in mixed traffic, both indoors and outdoors. It reliably automates vehicle movement from end-of-line to shipping, improving flow and reducing manual effort.
Our solution is already deployed at three BMW factories in Germany, with expansions planned across Europe and the U.S.

How it works

Embotech’s AVM solution is built on an infrastructure-based autonomy model, where the intelligence resides in the factory - not the vehicle. No sensors or onboard self-driving systems are required in the vehicle.

The system uses lidars mounted in the factory infrastructure to localize each finished vehicle with centimeter-level accuracy. These lidars continuously scan the environment, identifying static and dynamic objects in real time.

Our offboard autonomy stack handles:
Perception: Detecting and classifying objects
Predictions: Estimating object behavior
Planning: Computing safe and efficient trajectories

The driving trajectories are transmitted wirelessly to the vehicle 10 times per second, in compact data packets of around 150 bytes.

Our Vehicle Management System integrates directly with the factory backend. It assigns missions to each vehicle and ensures optimal logistics throughput.

As vehicles become equipped with Level 5 self-driving capabilities, our system remains relevant by addressing upstream logistics challenges in the production process.

AVM can autonomously transport a vehicle “skateboard” chassis to production islands - before it is fitted with its autonomous driving hardware. This supports modular and flexible production architectures, reducing dependency on traditional linear assembly lines.
